Woman blames medical negligence for daughter's hearing loss

Abigail Wiley was in distress the day after her birth. St. Mary’s Medical Center, in South Carolina, took three samples from her body to see if there were any issues, and sent them to LabCorp. She was transferred to Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) .

Four days after she arrived at CAMC, one of the results came back positive for cytomegalovirus (CMV). This is the leading cause of non-genetic hearing loss in children. One week later, the results of the other two tests were positive. The doctor failed to obtain the lab reports from St. Mary’s Medical Center, showing she was positive for CMV and discharged her.

Her parent stated, “LabCorp did not otherwise flag these reports or alert St. Mary’s Medical Center of Abigail Wiley’s positive results for CMV…” She never received proper treatment protocol for CMV, which ultimately led to her permanent and severe hearing loss.

This is why we must act now. When medical negligence happens, Nevadans can be put out of work or permanently disabled. We need to fight back, starting by giving victims the power to seek justice when they are hurt or worse.
