Supreme Court Sides with Nevada’s Victims over Uber’s Deep Pockets

Justices say the tech giant’s petition – aimed at protecting themselves from liability – was “deceptive and misleading”

LAS VEGAS –While celebrating the Nevada Supreme Court’s ruling finding Uber’s petition

“deceptive and misleading” in its description of effect – Empower Nevadans Now reminds

consumers to keep a close eye on Uber and their corporate allies during the 2025 legislative

session. While the Court unanimously rejected Uber’s cynical attempt to use Nevada’s ballot to

buy their way out of accountability, Nevada consumers are still exposed to the shady tech giant’s

negligence.

“This company’s disturbing track record of paying well-heeled, corporate lobbyists to work

against their own drivers and passengers must be exposed, and we are going to do just that,”

Jennifer Parks, President of Empower Nevadans Now, said. “Whether on the ballot or through

the Legislature, Nevadans should be very suspicious about any agenda this company is trying to

advance.”

Uber’s long history of prioritizing profits over their passengers is a matter of public record:

● From 2017 to 2022 – by the company’s own admission – Uber received reports of 12,522

sexual assaults involving drivers and passengers, including 1,156 attempted rapes and

1,207 rapes. Meanwhile, experts estimate “sexual abuse in Uber rides are notoriously

under-reported, and experts estimate that approximately 18,000 passengers and drivers

are sexually abused each year during a rideshare ride.”

● In Nevada, taxi drivers are required to go through a full fingerprint and FBI background

check process. Meanwhile, Uber’s fast and superficial background checks leave riders

exposed to drivers with long criminal histories. Allowing Uber’s internal process system

to approve a single driver with 24 alias names, five listed birth dates, ten listed Social

Security numbers, and an active warrant for their arrest.

● The company even imposed surge pricing during Superstorm Sandy in the northeast,

and has lobbied in state legislatures to allow companies to spike riders’ prices during

declared States of Emergency.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling is an obvious victory for Nevada consumers and we are grateful the

Justices saw through Uber’s efforts to mislead voters into signing their rights away,” Parks said,

“But we have to remember that we are dealing with a company so large that will stop at nothing

to protect their sweetheart deal in Nevada. It is important we all keep a close eye on their next

steps.”
